Auditions for “Into the Woods”

SYNOPSIS: Weaving together plots and characters from several classic fairy tales, “Into the Woods” is one of theatre icon Stephen Sondheim’s most loved works. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

PERFORMANCES: October 19, 2018 to November 18, 2018 (Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, Sunday matinees at 2 PM)

AUDITIONS will take place Monday August 20 from 7-10 PM and Tuesday August 21 from 7-10 PM. Callbacks will be Thursday August 23 from 7-10 PM. *A possible extra audition date will be added depending on interest.**

Please come prepared with a headshot and resume. You must note ALL potential conflicts for rehearsals and performances on the evening of your auditions. Please audition with a 16-32 bar cut in the style of the show that will best display your vocal range. An accompanist will be provided if you bring sheet music in the correct key. CDs will also be accepted if they are cut/cued to the correct length. Callbacks will consist of musical selections from the show and cold readings from the script. No dance audition. Closed auditions; please make an appointment.

*The Narrator (YOUNG MALE, approx. 12 years of age) – A highly energetic and rambunctious story-teller who helps to orchestrate the show and illustrate lessons to the audience. He is a strong presence throughout the show and plays a significant role in the story that unfolds. The actor playing the narrator must be able to command the stage and maintain his enthusiasm for the FULL duration of the show. This role is not for the shy or laid back. Can also be played by a young girl. Minimal singing. Lead.

*Cinderella (FEMALE, 15-30) – A young, earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella wishes her life were different. However, upon getting her wish, she realizes it’s not what she thought it would be. Must be honorable and full of hope. Vocal range: G3-G5. Lead.

*Jack (MALE, 15-25) – The feckless giant slayer who is ‘almost a man.’ He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed. Vocal range: B2-G4. Lead.

*Jack’s Mother (FEMALE, 35-60) – Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed. Vocal range: Bb3-Gb5. Can also be played by a male. Supporting.

*The Baker (MALE, 25-45) – A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles. Vocal ranger: Ab2-G4. Lead.

*The Baker’s Wife (FEMALE, 25-45) – A determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple, yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive in her endeavors. Vocal range: F3-G5. Lead.

*Cinderella’s Stepmother (FEMALE, 40-50) – The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella. Vocal range: A3-F#5. Featured.

*Florinda And Lucinda (FEMALES, 16-30) – Cinderella’s stepsisters who are black of heart. They follow in their mother’s footsteps of abusing Cinderella. Vocal range: C4-Ab5. Featured.

*Little Red Riding Hood (FEMALE, 15-20) – A spoiled young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, yet youthful and naive. Vocal range: Bb3-F5. Lead.

*The Witch (FEMALE, 30-50) – Sarcastic, ugly-then-gorgeous, obsessive protector of Rapunzel who is straightforward and aggressive. Vocal range: F3-G5. Lead.

*Cinderella’s Mother/Granny/The Giant (FEMALE, 40-50) – Deceased with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree. Will double as Granny (Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother) & possibly the Giant (an angry and vengeful ‘monster’ – voiceover). Vocal range: E4-F4. Featured.

*The Mysterious Man (MALE, 40-60) – A mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler. He is a good-natured protector and observer with a secret. Vocal range: G2-Eb4. Supporting.

*Rapunzel (FEMALE, 15-30) – A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world. Vocal range: B3-A5. Featured.

*Cinderella’s Prince/The Wolf (MALE, 20-35) – Vain and gorgeous, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing. Will double as the Wolf – A hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey. Vocal range: Bb2-Gb4. Supporting.

*Rapunzel’s Prince (MALE, 18-30) – Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exciting endeavor. He is also tired of living under his brother’s shadow for so long. Vocal range: C#3-E4. Featured.

**Performers of various ages and vocal ranges are also needed to play the following roles:

*The Steward – A servant to Cinderella’s Prince. Will be folded into the singing/acting ensemble.
*Cinderella’s Father – Cinderella’s absent father. Will be folded into the singing/acting ensemble.
*Snow White & Sleeping Beauty – These two need no introduction. Will be folded into the singing/acting ensemble.
