In the early 1970s, before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, middle-aged Agnes has turned her quiet bed and breakfast into one of the few spots where victims of domestic violence can seek refuge. But to Agnes’s dismay, her latest runaway, Mary Anne, is beginning to influence Agnes’s college-bound daughter Penny. As the drums of a feminist revolution grow louder outside of Agnes’s tiny world, Agnes is forced to confront her own presumptions about the women she’s spent her life trying to help.

Praised by the New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter, and written by Sarah Treem, famous for her work on the acclaimed TV series “House of Cards”, this emotional drama explores life in 70s as well as how people of different backgrounds and beliefs overcome it together.

Produced through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

AGNES: Late 40s-50s. Mother to Penny. Runs her bed and breakfast and harbors a few secrets. Trying to understand the changing political climate and her daughter.

MARY ANNE: 20s, possibly early 30s. Runaway. Broken and trying to hide it. Feminism is a strange thing to her. Hides a dark secret. Is the catalyst for change. Thinks she understands men.

PENNY: Teenager. Daughter to Agnes. Opinionated. Pulled between Agnes and Mary Anne’s views. Smarter than anyone her age.

PAUL: Late 20s-30s. Songwriter, though not the best. Running from a marriage that didn’t work out. In love with being in charge & thinks that he’s the nicest guy.

HANNAH: Late 20s-30s. A traveler. Strongly opinionated about a changing political climate. Wants desperately to help others since she doesn’t know how to help herself.
